Data distribution makes it possible to fit the simulation in the system, but it inherently complicates the process of coupling in both bulk-coupled and interface-coupled problems, making it necessary to resort to complex communication patterns and strategies.

After formalizing a general coupling problem and showing other interesting study-cases for mesh-coupling, we report on the strategies found in literature. We propose solutions for a serial approach to the problem, and show how they fall short in a distributed setting, making it necessary to develop new strategies. A distributed algorithm is proposed and analyzed, and possible future developments are discussed.
