Project title:

Performance of foam-extend on Ulysses Cluster with different MPI/foam-extend settings

This thesis is the first step towards the optimization of a already high-performance and parallel library: OpenFOAM. In particular, the Naval Hydro Pack plug-in of foam-extend has been the object of these studies. The considered case study is a steady resistance test on planning hull, and was solved by means of the navalFoam application.

The numerical solution of the modeled physical problem requires different algorithms. Different combinations of theses algorithms leads to different solution strategies. Aim of the present work is to benchmark and document, trough a systematic analysis, these solution strategies.

In such scenario, also the topology of the communication between MPI pro-
cesses matters. Therefore, the effects of MPI advanced placement patterns are investigated as well. All the numerical experiments have been conducted on the Ulysses cluster.
